Frequently asked Questions

Is GRACIE JIU JITSU the same as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Yes and no. GRACIE JIU JITSU is the formal name of the martial art founded by the Gracie family and today it generally signifies a focus on self defense. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the generic term often used as it has become more recognizable. One difference is that frequently seen is that schools that call themselves BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) spend more time on competition focused Jiu Jitsu but may spend less time on the self defense that is a priority at GRACIE JIU JITSU schools.

What is better, Karate or Jiu Jitsu for self defense?

GRACIE JIU JITSU has been called the most effective, street ready martial art in the world. Instead of punching and kicking your way out of an attack, the focus is on using leverage and techniques with a simple process of closing the distance, achieving a clinch, finishing the fight with a standing submission hold or taking the fight to the ground and finishing the fight in a dominant position with a submission hold. This and more is what makes this the perfect martial art for kids, youth and women!

Is there any punching and kicking in GRACIE JIU JITSU?

Yes! Once students gain a solid foundation they are then taught striking as a way to distract, help achieve a clinch and finish the fight. In fact, a Pisao (front kick to the knee) is taught in the beginning as a way to help close the distance against a violent attacker. Watch Royce Gracie in the first couple Ultimate Fighting Championships to see the Pisao in action!

What should I wear when trying an introductory class?

Comfortable clothes like joggers and a t shirt are perfect. We have a loaner uniform you can wear as well.

What is the structure or plan for each class?

We start with a warm up and a review of the previous class and then learn the new techniques on the class schedule. At the end the class finishes with positional/situational training to develop reflexes, timing and accuracy.

Is Griffin Jiu Jitsu Academy really a GRACIE JIU JITSU school?

Yes! Griffin Jiu Jitsu Academy is a GRACIE JIU JITSU school under Master Pedro Sauer and the Pedro Sauer BJJ Association. Before passing, Helio Gracie told Pedro Sauer that he was GRACIE JIU JITSU and part of the family so to honor Helio’s legacy and to adhere to the Gracie Jiu Jitsu he was taught, we follow the self defense and techniques as passed down by Helio and Rickson Gracie. As a way to differentiate from Gracie University certified training centers Pedro Sauer affiliates use “Pedro Sauer Team” after the title Gracie Jiu Jitsu. That’s why you will see the title of our school: GRACIE JIU JITSU Pedro Sauer Team Griffin Academy.

Is the introductory lesson really free?

Yes, the introductory lesson is absolutely free BUT along with that, the first week is also free so that you are able to try out class at different times and on different days.
